Best Scooter For a 5 or 6 year old
By this age a lot of children will have moved on from the three wheel scooters they had as pre-schoolers and will need a larger scooter. Things to look out for when buying scooters for 5 or 6 year olds include the build quality, the type of wheels the scooter has and the weight of the scooter. You will also need to decide whether you want another 3 wheel scooter or whether your child is ready for a 2 wheel scooter. Most children will be ready to transition to a 2 wheel scooter but if you think your child needs the extra stability offered by a 3 wheel scooter there are several options available. Another important factor is what the scooter will be used for. Is it for the school run or will your child be using the scooter just for fun or at weekends? The more you use the scooter the better built and better quality it will need to be.
Below we have selected our favourite 2 and 3 wheel scooters for children aged 5 – 6 years old.
Best 2 wheel scooter for 5 and 6 year olds.
Micro Sprite Scooter
This scooter is the perfect scooter for children who are new to 2 wheel scooters. Micro scooters rate it as a beginner scooter for this reason. It is suitable for children between the ages of 5 and 12 and costs around £80. (current price). The handlebar height is adjustable so the scooter grows with your child. This is a light scooter (3.2kg) so is easy to transport and carry. It is also foldable so stores easily as well. Micro scooters are Swizz engineered and this is a good quality well made scooter. The maximum weight for the rider is 100kg so in theory the child can ride the scooter to school and their parent can ride it home again! This scooter has the reputation of giving the rider a fast and a smooth ride. One thing to note is that this is not a stunt scooter and is not designed to do tricks or stunts. One possible weakness is in the folding mechanism which can deteriorate if the scooter is misused. The Micro Sprite Scooter is available in several colours. Full Range of Colours.
Best 3 wheel scooter for 5 and 6 year olds
The best quality scooter but also the most expensive for this reason is the Maxi Micro Scooter. Like the Micro Sprite scooter above it is made by Micro Scooters and is Swiss engineered. This scooter is suitable for children aged 6 and up. The handlebar height is adjustable and at the lowest setting is probably OK for a lot of 5 year olds as well. This scooter can’t be folded but the handle bar can be removed for storage. This is probably one of the most popular 3 wheel scooters available because it is built to last and is very durable as well as being easy and comfortable to use. The price is around £99 – latest price on Amazon. Another plus for this scooter is its weight. It only weights 2.5 kg so is very portable. This 3 wheel scooter is perfect for children who like a little bit more stability while they scoot. It comes in several colours all available for around the same price. See complete range of colours here.
If the maxi micro scooter is too expensive for you then a cheaper alternative to consider is the iScoot Pro V2 Scooter. This scooter is around £45 on amazon (see current price). It is marketed as being for age 3 and up but has a height of 80cm so will be suitable for most 5 and 6 year olds. The iScoot Pro V2 gets very good reviews and is a pretty reliable scooter. One big plus is that it folds so can be easily stored or put in the car boot. Both this scooter an the Maxi Micro have breaks at the back for added security and control.
A more affordable all round scooter suitable for 5 and 6 year olds
Is the JD Bug Jr Street Scooter MS100. This scooter gets a 5 star rating on amazon and costs just over £30. It weighs only 2.3 kg so it light enough to carry. It has adjustable height and is easy to fold up. This is a great little scooter that looks good and doesn’t cost too much. It is perfect for 5 and 6 year olds but has a lower maximum rider weight (50kg) than some of the more expensive scooters. The height range of the scooter is 63cm – 84.5cm. The maximum height of the more expensive Micro Sprite is 92cm which is quite a lot bigger.
Another low priced scooter
Is the Ozbozz lightning strike scooter. This scooter is available in pink as per the picture and also in blue. It costs about £20 on Amazon and gets a 4 star rating. It features a flashing light around the deck which is operated by batteries and can be turned off when not needed. Its a great scooter if you just want to have fun around the park and looks great. It is made of metal and the handle bars are adjustable with 3 possible heights. The maximum rider weight in 100kg. It can also be folded for storage. This scooter is perfect for occasional use for a 5 or 6 year old child.
Should you buy a foldable scooter?
If storage is an issue or if you want to be able to carry the scooter easily then it is probably a good idea to get a scooter that can fold. You should note however that if your child wants to do tricks then a scooter that folds will not be suitable. In this case you should be looking for a purpose built stunt scooter. The folding mechanism on most scooters is a potential weak point that won’t be able to stand up to doing lots of tricks and stunts.
